The Underdog - Nick Walters, The Paradox Ensemble
Jazz trumpeter Nick Walters launched his own label in order to release the latest music from The Paradox Ensemble. The gain is ours. The 11-piece outfit includes Ed âTenderloniousâ Cawthorne on flute, soprano and tenor sax; Rebecca Nash on piano; guitarist Anton Hunter; and drummer Jim Molyneux - plus horns, keys, bass guitar, and percussion. This track kicks off the new album, âImplicate Orderâ, in fine funky polyrhythmic style.
My voice - Kalie Shorr
Like many a country act, Kalie Shorr has a backstory straight out of supermarket celebrity magazine - a siblingâs fatal heroin overdose; feckless boyfriend; eating disorder relapse. But the Nashville-based 25-year-old has fashioned the hard knocks into a narrative that is all her own. As she sings on this infections ear-worm: âToo rock for country, too country for punk/But who said I had to pick either one?â No-one is arguing so far.
The birth of us - Logan Richardson
Alto-saxophonist Logan Richardson more than holds his own faced with a sonic bombardment from his superlative Blues People band, comprising Igor Osypov, guitar; Peter Schlamb, vibes and keys; Dominique Sanders, bass; plus Ryan J. Lee and Corey Fonville, percussion and drums. Steeped in the American jazz improvisation tradition, Richardson nevertheless has his sights trained on innovation and experiment.
