The open mic scene in Brighton is thriving. On any night of the week you can take in a range of musical events from folk to jazz to blues. Of course, not all of it would give a Springsteen, a Beyoncé, or a Taylor Swift pause to wonder if the competition is too intense.
But most of what you will hear is heartfelt; some of it will have you wondering why the act you are seeing remains unsigned and obscure. Life is hard, is the answer.
In a future piece on this site, I might take a tour d’horizon of the delights of the gigging choices across Brighton and Hove.
But today, I want to talk about jazz.
